DIY Dry Erase Board Tutorial

Published on: Jun 18 2012 by margo

Carrie and I have been busy with new projects to share with you! Today I am excited to share this dry erase board I made in about an hour. Using a poster frame from Wal Mart ($10.00) and a can of pistachio spray paint ($3.00) I made this inexpensive alternative to a white board. My office is currently sporting tones of pistachio and powder blue, so I knew when I saw this can of spray paint on sale it would be a perfect fit. I love the fact that you can choose your own color scheme instead of plain old white!

For this project you will need:

1. Poster Frame. I got mine at Wal Mart for $10 in the frame section

2. Spray Paint: Also Wal mart (on sale!)

3. Masking Tape

4. Dry Erase Markers

Step 1: You’ll want to tape the side that you want to be the writing surface so the paint won’t accidentally get on it.

Step 2: Lay plastic or glass piece (mine was plastic) on a flat surface and start spray painting! Mine took about 4 coats until it was totally opaque.

Step 3: Open some wine while the paint dries and relax… the paint only takes about 10 minutes to dry so maybe shots would be better… we love drinking and crafting!

Step 4: Place plastic or glass piece back into frame and enjoy your new white board!

I hung mine in my office. It’s nice to be able to make lists without wasting a sheet of paper everyday!

Carrie actually made an alternative to the framed board. She used a piece of thick plastic but instead of a frame, she applied magnets to the back and put it on the fridge! These are much more decorative (and inexpensive) than a regular white board. We hope you enjoyed our little tutorial!

Shots while waiting for the paint to dry….love it:)

  2. Good stuff – I haven’t seen one made with spray paint as a color backing before – great idea.

These two ways of making “whiteboards” would probably work well on a larger sized areas as well. Thanks for the good info!

Where would I find thick, colored plastic for a magnetic dry erase board? I love this idea!

So dry erase markers erase off of a surface of spray paint? Now that it has been a little bit of time, is it still erasing well off of it?

I love the idea of painting the glass. I wasn’t as creative, I bought an old frame with cardboard backing and painted the backing. I could have saved a lot of trouble had I just thought to paint the glass. Thanks for this idea.
